particle wave is an exhibition about edges. Paint edges, colour edges, spatial edges. These paintings are my thinking through ideas about different scales of reality and the intangible structures that exist in parallel such as gravity, light, air currents and time. The interaction of paint edges in these works, at both small and large scale, are my ruminations on how intangible surfaces hold together.
Shown at Post Office Projects, Port Adelaide in May 2024.
The main painting:
'particle wave', 2024 is a diptych considering the intangible structures that exist in parallel such as gravity, light, entropy and time. The interaction of paint edges in this work, and particularly the tonal values, are my ruminations on how intangible surfaces hold together. Each line has been painted over at between 2-6 times as the overall palette continuously shifted. The paintings went through many stages - tilting green, pink, blue, lavender, khaki and grey - until I found eventual equilibrium. The persistent vertical lines are a motif in my practice, as I enjoy their destabilising quality in absence of a horizon line, as well as their connection with warp threads in weaving (I am also a tapestry weaver).
The lampworked glass 'bubbles' bridge the gap between the two paintings and their transparent, curved surfaces reflect the palette back to us in miniature warped arcs.
