fold piece, 2020, upholstery velvet, Murray River pink salt flakes, PVA glue, pins, approx 20cm x 600m
fold piece is approximately 15m of upholstery velvet compressed into 4m. The velvet forms are cast from curtains in my childhood home, with the folds and airpockets recreated in the new material. The top rim is carefully lined with Murray River pink salt flakes, which gives a crystallised and slightly glint-y edge. This work was made during the disruptive year of 2020, and is in reference to the passing of my grandmother during this time. The Murray River pink salt is a direct reference to her and her home in Mildura, Victoria.
Created for Life Forms group exhibition with Lucy Turnbull, Zoe Freney, Tahlia Wignall, Nancy Downes and Zoe Kirkwood at Praxis Artspace, Adelaide. More info and catalogue essay by Dr Sera Waters here.
